For purposes of clarity and clear understanding the project defines autism to include conditions common and allied to it such as anxiety,
dyspraxia , in as far as they are conditions subject to SEN and often can be undiognosed or diognosed wrongly because they do not appear to be different. but just act different! In simple terms it is conditions allied to cognitive process - the brain, rather than a physical disabilty or condition which is clear to see by appearance. Many with such "invisible" condition suffer during school and reach later teens under acheiving and misunderstood. It is this sector that can often most benefit by taking part in drama and creative activity - where they often excel, much to their surprise and those around them.
Drama can build up personal self confidence and help bring an understanding to issues such as hyper activity, perceived poor concentration, anger issues and so on. Once they and people around them have the knowledge of what makes someone with autism/SEN tick life becomes more transparent and happier for those concerned. It is not the [place here to go into detailed explanation, but suffice to say those on the spectrum of austism and allied conditions wil be encouraged fully to build on their talents and to understand that being different is not anything to be ashamed of.
Indeed so many of those on the spectrum excel in drama and there is a very high number of creatives in the industry and creative workplace whose talents come from the very way their brain works differently to those considered neurotypical.
Dramania tries to acheive a blend of different actors/participants thinking differently but creatively.
With in education drama likely to be less or even not happening in schools and colleges the programme has extended it's age range to those of school age upto 25 approx to take part.
The usual requirements for those under 16 will ofcourse apply - ie a chaperone /parent must also attend any meeting.
Those 16-18 are set on an individual basis and at 18 ofcourse partipants can attend on their own [but can have a friend/relative/represtative with them if they wish.
Obviously all visits must meet current lockdown social distancing guidance.
Anyone intersted in becoming involved should feel free to e.mail hello@dramania.uk with any questions about such involvment.
